Daduru Oya Reservoir

The Deduru Oya Reservoir, also known as Daduru Oya Reservoir, is a remarkable engineering feat situated in the Kurunegala District of Sri Lanka. This impressive embankment dam, completed in 2014, spans across the Deduru River, serving as a vital resource for irrigation and water management. Let us explore the significance of the Daduru Oya Reservoir and the transformative impact it has had on the region.

1. Introduction: Unveiling the Daduru Oya Reservoir

The Daduru Oya Reservoir, located in the picturesque landscape of the Kurunegala District, Sri Lanka, stands as a testament to human ingenuity and the harnessing of natural resources. Built as an embankment dam, it serves as a pivotal structure in water management, irrigation, and sustainable development in the region.

2. Water Management and Irrigation

The primary purpose of the Daduru Oya Reservoir is to retain and manage water resources for irrigation purposes. With a capacity to hold approximately a billion cubic meters of water, the reservoir acts as a vital source of irrigation for agricultural lands in the surrounding areas. By capturing and storing water that would otherwise flow out to sea, the reservoir ensures a steady supply of water for cultivation, boosting agricultural productivity and improving the livelihoods of local communities.

The Inginimitiya Reservoir (Puttlam district), the Magalla Reservoir (Nikaweratiya), and approximately 300 minor tanks in the Wariyapola DS division, Kotawehera, Kobeiganea, and Mahawa DS division currently receive water supplies. Approximately 30,000 of the aforementioned area has been cultivated during the Yala and Maha seasons in 2015 and 2016. On November 22, 2014, His Excellency the President proclaimed the project open after the headworks were finished.
As of the end of July 2016, Rs. 11,262.32 million had already been used. The project is now finished.
A project to supply drinking water from Daduru Oya Reservoir has also begun. Benefits of water consumption have begun for 3000 families.
Under the Daduru Oya Project, the damaged Sengal Oya Anicut is developed (Lower Daduru Oya Project).

3. Environmental Impact: Biodiversity and Conservation

While the Daduru Oya Reservoir primarily serves as a water resource management structure, it has also had a positive impact on the environment. The creation of the reservoir has resulted in the formation of a new aquatic habitat, attracting various species of flora and fauna. The surrounding areas have witnessed an increase in biodiversity, offering opportunities for ecological research and conservation efforts. The reservoir plays a crucial role in maintaining the delicate balance of the ecosystem and preserving natural habitats.

4. Recreational Opportunities: A Haven for Nature Enthusiasts

The Daduru Oya Reservoir presents ample recreational opportunities for nature enthusiasts and outdoor enthusiasts. The serene surroundings and the tranquil waters provide a picturesque setting for boating, fishing, and birdwatching. Visitors can immerse themselves in the natural beauty of the reservoir, exploring its banks and indulging in activities that foster a deep appreciation for the environment.

5. Sustainable Development and Economic Benefits

The Daduru Oya Reservoir has played a pivotal role in promoting sustainable development and economic growth in the region. The reliable water supply for irrigation has contributed to increased agricultural productivity, leading to improved livelihoods for local communities. Additionally, the reservoir has created tourism opportunities, generating revenue and employment for the local population. The sustained benefits of the reservoir ensure long-term prosperity and economic stability.
